The State Board of Elections was created by the 1970 Constitution of the State of Illinois to have "general supervision over the administration of the
registration and election laws throughout the state." (Ill. Const. Art. III, § 5) Powers and duties are exercised in accordance with 10 ILCS 5/1A-8 of
the Election Code.
The Board acts as a policy-making body and is authorized to employ full-time, professional non-partisan staff
members to assist in carrying out its statutory duties.
